Termite Control in Myrtle Beach

Termites can be one of the most destructive insects in our area but less than 4% of termites will ever cause damage to your home. Let's take a deeper look into termites, how they benefit the Earth, some termite control methods and some other information about termites in and around Myrtle Beach.

Termite Biology and Identification

Types of Termites

Subterranean Termites - Termites that live in colonies under the ground and must have contact with the soil to survive. They are the most common and destructive termite species, specifically on the South Carolina coast in Horry County. Subterranean termites build mud tubes to reach above ground to find additional wood sources. They seek out moist wood since they prefer wood that is easy to consume.

Drywood Termites - Drywood termites on the other hand live and feed inside of dry wood, unlike subterranean termites they do not need soil or moisture to survive. Their colonies are much smaller than subterranean termites and infest wood directly. Their treatment methods are different, consisting of spot treatments or tent fumigation.

In Horry County and the surrounding areas of South Carolina, there have been far fewer cases of drywood termites but subterranean termites are abundant. In Myrtle Beach and surrounding areas on average there are 15-25 different subterranean termite colonies per acre of land. For the rest of this page we will specifically focus on subterranean termites.

Termite Biology

Termites live in colonies and like other insects are social. They have distinct roles that include workers, soldiers and reproductive termites. They live in complex colonies underground and if needed, will create mud tubes to come above the surface to feed on wood. Termites feed on the cellulose, the carbohydrate in wood that gives it strength. This is one reason why termite damage is destructive since they feed on the compound of wood that gives it's strength. The way in which they digest wood makes termites essential to the natural ecosystem of our planet but when they infest your home the damage they cause can be catastrophic.

They look very similar to ants even though they are believed to have evolved from a species of wood roach thousands of years ago. Termites have a straight antennae, thicker waists and their swarmer termites have two sets of identical wings. Ants on the other hand have an angled antennae, three distinctive body parts and their swarmer ants have 2 sets of different sized wings.

Being able to tell the difference between an ant and termite is critical when it comes to the treatment that will help protect your home. If you're unsure, give Bug Busters Pest and Mosquito Control a call/text today at 843-284-3375!

Termite Signs & Basic Prevention Ideas

In our area the most abundant termite species is the subterranean termite, which by it's name lives almost all of it's life underground. The easiest sign of a termite infesting your home is a mud tube that they create to get above the ground to feed on the wood of your home. If you have a crawlspace you can find them on any of the structural supports touching the ground. For a slab home they can create tubes up the side of your home and under your siding or if there is a crack/gap in the slab they can infest your home that way.

Some simple things you can do as a homeowner to help prevent termites from infesting your home are:

  • Remove wood debris from around your home.
  • Make sure the slab portion of your home is not covered by mulch or other landscaping features.
  • Keep unwanted moisture from building up in your home, specifically if you have a crawl space.
  • Fixing leaks ASAP so that moisture issues do not get out of hand.
  • Maintain proper drainage around your home.

Some signs of subterranean termites in your home include but are not limited to bulging drywall or other surfaces, discarded wings found inside from swarming termites, hollow sounding wood or framing or easiest to identify are mud tubes or live termites.

Termite Treatment Options and How to Control Termites

When it comes to subterranean termites the treatments options are straight forward. Since the colony is living in the ground we will want to use termite control methods that the termites will take underground with them and eliminate the colony. There are three methods and we will briefly touch on them below. Below we will talk about post-construction treatment options. We will be creating a post shortly about pre-construction treatments that are required to build in the state of South Carolina.

Spot Treatment Termite Control

If we find termites in your home we will first start with a spot treatment using some sort of Fipronil product usually in the form of a foaming can. We will drill into cavities where we know termites have build mud tubes and are feeding on the wood of your home, then inject the foam that will get onto the termites. The main product we use is called Termidor Foam and it in undetectable by the termites, it is carried on the termite's body once they come in contact with the product and pass it along to other termites as they move around. Depending on the size of the termite colony this might not always eliminate all of the termites. We also will perform one of the methods below but usually both in conjunction with spot treatments.

Termite Bait Stations

Termite bait stations are exactly what they sound like, they are a plastic station that goes underground that is filled with a termite bait. The one's we use are called Trelona Annual Bait Stations and they have two canisters in them with an active ingredient called Novaluron. Termites consume the bait and pass it throughout the entire colony. Novaluron is a chitin synthesis inhibitor which means that termites cannot molt properly which ends up killing them. Baits have been proven treatment methods that will eliminate the entire colon within 1-3 months from them finding the bait station in the ground.

Termite Liquid Treatment

Termite liquid treatments are done by creating a protective barrier around your home or underneath your home if you have a crawlspace of some sort. We will have articles at some point going further in depth but essentially the liquid is applied using a trench and drill method or by an injection application machine to get the correct amount of termiticide into the soil around the home. This creates a barrier that lasts 5-10 years depending on the product that is used that will eventually kill any termites that come in contact with the treated soil. Just like a spot treatment, depending on the size of the colony is can effectively eliminate all of the termites.

At Bug Busters Pest and Mosquito Control we use a multi-pronged approach, with all of our liquid and bait station combo treatments we give the homeowner a warranty so that in the event their home gets a termite infestations we cover the damage the termites cause up to $500,000 and will retreat for free in order to eliminate the termites that are harming your home. Learn more about our warranties by giving us a call/text at 843-284-3375.

How Much Should a Termite Treatment Cost?

Termite treatments and prevention methods are usually priced on a linear foot basis. Essentially your home/structure is measured by how much linear footage is required to be treated and the cost is priced at a dollar per linear foot rate.

For our company, as of 2025 termite bait systems are averaging $800 for a 200 linear foot home but depending on the type of soil, landscaping or other obstacles the price can increase. Liquid treatments are about the same price but can vary even more since the ground around the slab or crawlspace of the home needs to be treated with the termiticide, so if there are obstacles in the way it can increase the cost.

We always give free estimates to all of our customers and go over in depth the process we will be using to treat an active termite infestation or the methods we will use to prevent an infestation from occurring in the first place.

A combination of thorough yearly inspections and a solid preventative termite treatment will help keep your most prized investment safe from subterranean termite damage.
