In the south fire ants are one of the most common ants you will encounter, especially in the sandy soil of Horry County. It allows the ants to easily create large colonies throughout your yard. Just when you thought you got rid of one mound, two more pop up over night.
Fire ants are not native to the United States. They were brought in during the early 20th century from cargo ships coming from South America. Due to their adaptability and aggressive nature in expanding their colonies they have spread all throughout the southern portion of the US.
Fire ants prefer sunny areas that are warm, their colonies can be massive and involve multiple queens to help reproduce frequently to increase the size of the colony exponentially. Fire ants are like most ants and they have queens, workers and soldiers. Soldiers protect the colony from invaders and outside threats, while the workers gather food and distribute it throughout the colony. The workers also build and maintain the colony which is almost exclusively underground except for their raised earth openings that are guarded by thousands of soldiers.
Aside from creating large mound looking exit holes on all over your yard, fire ants deliver a powerful sting that can cause sever allergic reactions in some people. Some individuals have sever allergic reactions to the toxin solenopsin from fire ant venom that can lead to anaphylaxis.
Fire ants are smart when they attack, usually attacking in large number to overwhelm their target. Unfortunately if it is your body, they can cause blistering that is filled with pus that can stay for a number of days. Unlike bees, fire ants will can sting multiple times. Fire ants first bite their victim using their mandibles so that it can attach itself to the skin, then it will use it's stinger in the rear of it's body to inject the venom into it's target. Their venom is an alkaloid toxin.
Don't fear though, at Bug Busters Pest and Mosquito Control we can help keep your yard fire ant free all year round so you can enjoy it all of the time.

Fire ants are a constant threat along the Grand Strand. Due to our awesome climate, it also attracts unwanted pests into your yard. We will talk about the two main methods we use to keep your yard fire ant free.
Bug Busters utilizes integrated pest management systems for all pests and that includes fire ants. Unfortunately there are not many natural ways to cure fire ant problems. They don't mind if your grass is short, long or just a patch of dirt. We use a product called Taurus Trio G that has three active ingredients. Fipronil, Bifenthrin, and Lamba-Cyhalothrin. In simple terms it has a quick kill of the ant colonies population and a 12 month residual that will keep fire ants out of your yard.
We believe in the product so much that we guarantee it for 12 months or we will come back to retreat your yard free of charge. Usually they do not come back but if they do it is on the outskirts of your yard or along concrete where we cannot treat completely. Our full yard fire ant treatments start at $175, the pricing is determined by the square footage of your yard.
Aside from treating your entire yard, we offer a service along with our General Preventative pest control spray where we will spot treat fire ant mounds with a number of different fire ant granular. They usually consist of a bait that we sprinkle around a mound. The hope is that the workers will grab the bait and distribute it throughout the colony which will kill off the ant population and the queen. The downside to these type of spot treatments is they are weather dependent, workers need to grab the bait and if a colony has multiple queens it may not reach all of them which will not eliminate 100% of the colony.
